Exercise in later life

Sustaining a level of physical activity and maintaining a good level of fitness is important regardless of our age. Find out more about the benefits of physical exercise in later life and the best types of exercise for you and your lifestyle.

But as we get older we need to ensure the exercise we do is suitable for us in order to prevent injury and strain. If you are over 50 undertake appropriate exercise regularly. A little exercise undertaken often can be beneficial to keep joints mobile and avoid stiffness, so if it suits your lifestyle do some form of exercise every day but to reap the benefits avoid over-strenuous, time-consuming exercise.

Regular exercise which is particularly suitable for the over 50's includes:

Swimming

Running & Jogging

Walking

Gym work out

Golf

Aerobics classes

But remember..

Stretching and flexibility exercises as part of your warm up and cooling down program in order to prevent injury and strain

Combine your exercise regime with a well-balanced diet.

And finally don't overdo things - some exercise, however little is better than nothing.
