Fitness & exercise is for everyone!

Exercise offers us all a range of benefits in terms of our health and fitness but also offers social and personal benefits. People with physical or sensory impairments are less likely to undertake regular physical activity through issues relating to their disability, or because of accessibility problems, making some activities unsuitable.

There are currently a range of initiatives which aim to improve the provision for people with impairments and reduce accessibility barriers at local sports and leisure centres. From October 2004 it will become a legal requirement under the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act for all centres to make 'reasonable adjustments' in order to allow disabled people access to appropriate equipment, activities and suitably trained staff. This will open up the possibilities in terms of the range of exercise which can be undertaken by people with impairments which in many sports and leisure centres is currently restricted to swimming alone. Whilst swimming is probably the most common form of exercise for people with impairments mainly due to the fact that leisure centres provide designated sessions and specialist equipment to aid physical access, this is not the only form of appropriate exercise and as a result of the Disability Discrimination Act we see increased provision.
